Hiring International Employees

Step one: The hiring department should complete the Immigration Pre-Process Form, or contact UAMS Immigration Services by email at AskImmigration@uams.edu to request an immigration consultation appointment for the new employee or candidate.

Step two: Immigration Services will provide recommendations for the appropriate visa type. For most visa types, such as H-1B, J-1, and TN, the hiring department will need to initiate the case with Immigration Services to officially begin the process. Other visa types may not require a filing process. Immigration Services will provide the department with next steps.

Step three: The hiring department might assist in some steps, such as submitting the export control form, requesting filing fee checks, or sending the immigration documents to the new employee abroad. The international employee will be required to submit documents and information as well. After collecting all the necessary information and documents, Immigration Services will prepare and file the petitions or create the immigration documents needed by the international employee. If the employee is outside the U.S., they will have to apply for a visa stamp to enter the U.S.

Step four: The hiring department, recruiter, and Immigration Services team work together to ensure a smooth onboarding process for the new international employee.

UAMS Immigration Services processing time

H-1B: 60 days before filing the petition to USCIS

J-1 Research Scholar: 45 days before issuing the new J-1 packet

J-1 Alien Physician (Residents/Fellows): 30 days before filing the request to ECFMG

Please be aware that the above processing times are a general estimate, subject to change and may be longer during busy seasons.
