J-1 Alien Physician: Process

Initial and Extension Processes

Initial (New hires to UAMS)

When training departments match with medical residents or fellows who need a J-1 visa status to participate in a graduate medical education program, they will contact UAMS Immigration Services to start the process.
Steps for the Initial Process

Extension (Current UAMS employees)

This process is also called Continuation. The residents and fellows on J-1 visa are required to extend their J-1 visa status every year in order to continue their residency or fellowship programs. The extension program starts in January every year. UAMS Immigration Services contacts the training department to start the process.
