A stay interview is a conversation with a high-performing employee with the goal of discovering what they like about their role, and what they would like to change. Stay interviews are an opportunity to both uncover what motivates that employee and to also build trust with them as a manager. Having this information can help the manager to replicate the good/best practices they are already doing with one employee with the entire group. It will also help the manager understand what changes may be needed to be successful with the group.
Stay interviews are similar to an exit interview, except they are conversations with current employees who either aren’t planning to leave, or haven’t announced their intentions to leave yet. These conversations aim to understand the “secret sauce” to employee retention, or what an individual loves about working at your company, and what your business needs to change in order to keep them engaged and retained.
The benefits of conducting stay interviews:
- Get Insight – Gather employee sentiment and identify opportunities within the team; uncover root causes of turnover.
- Find solutions – improve the employee experience and ensure employees have a long, healthy career at your organization.
- Build trust and loyalty – Show your team you care about their experience and success.
- Retain top talent – Increase retention by understanding your workforce and how to keep them
