Employee Onboarding
Proper onboarding within the first 6 months of employment is essential to the success of new employees. An effective onboarding process establishes clear expectations, reviews job responsibilities, and ensures employees have the tools, resources, and support needed to succeed in their roles.
Onboarding should be viewed as an ongoing process rather than a one-time event. Managers should reinforce expectations and provide opportunities for feedback through a 45-day check-in, initial 90-day review, and, when appropriate, an extended 180-day review. These touchpoints provide an opportunity to assess progress, address challenges, recognize accomplishments, clarify expectations, and identify additional development or support needs.
Effective onboarding increases employee confidence and productivity while helping to foster a culture of inclusion, collaboration, and teamwork. Key areas to address during onboarding include, but are not limited to:
- Organizational Values: Introduce the organization’s mission, vision, values, and culture.
- Departmental Policies and Procedures: Review applicable policies, procedures, and departmental expectations.
- Job Expectations: Clearly communicate job duties, responsibilities, performance expectations, and priorities.
- Tools and Resources: Ensure employees have access to the systems, equipment, information, and resources necessary to perform their jobs.
- Relationship Building: Help employees establish connections with their manager, team members, and key partners.
- Feedback and Support: Provide regular feedback, coaching, and opportunities for employees to ask questions and seek guidance.
- Performance and Development: Connect onboarding expectations to the employee’s performance goals and ongoing professional development.
A strong onboarding experience helps employees understand what is expected, how their role contributes to the organization, and where to go for support—creating a stronger foundation for long-term success and engagement.
